ANTOINE SÉGUIN

In the project developed during the artist residency, Antoine Séguin focused on the contradictions of the contemporary landscape and on the hypothesis of a visual mapping intended to express the characters of fragmentation of the territory.

“Semblables (Similar) tells the story of similar lives at a crossroads, through a tale told by a woman walking through her daily life as she does across the land she lives in, an attempt to escape the everyday. Hers is a mobile area, one she constructs as we do our own, where geographic scales and feelings merge. No matter in which direction she looks, she perceives the line of the horizon. This vast plain is nothing but an urban sprawl with invisible borders that she knows only too well. Not by chance, the landscapes here follow each other and strangely resemble each other. For thousands of years, these places have been shaped by Humans, even more intensely in recent years. There is nothing “natural” any more, nothing to see, nothing picturesque. In their escape towards the horizon, her eyes focus on what she likes to call “events”. She knows that the way she looks at these places shapes them and changes her perception of them. All in all, from fields to wastelands, from paved roads to paths, she passes through places where urbanism has left voids. She connects the apparent monotony of her daily life with that of the local area. Going through the diversity of these fascinating landscapes, she strives to find undulations and hollows in these flat geographic spaces. The multiple possibilities offered by her wanderings provoke a feeling of freedom in her. With each of the events that animate the plain,
she weaves a special relationship, managing to isolate them in her mind, and realizes that, like her peers, she has formed a romantic relationship with her landscape.” (A.S.)
