The woman standing still in front of meANNE GOLAZRecalling the love story between Giorgione and Cecilia, in the project “The woman standing still in front of me”, made during the artist residency BEAUTY, Anne Golaz has developed a narrative that reveals fortuitous encounters and mysterious relationships of life. For Golaz Castelfranco is a place of doors and passages, the space in which the ego confronts itself with the other. “It’s a place of doors and passages, of arches and tunnels. It was through one of these many doorways that I entered the town one hot, pitch-black, autumn night, with the scent of lime blossom wafting in the warm air. Some towns welcome you with open arms. Others are suspicious or hostile and keep you at arm’s length, outside on the doorstep, year after year… forever perhaps. (Helsinki, for example, where I spent several years, is one. I waited on the threshold of that city for years before finally moving up north where, I warned myself, it would probably be even worse.) The town I was in now, however, hugged me in what you could call a warm embrace. Right from the start, the large linden trees leaned over me benevolently and from the very first night, the town seemed to be encouraging me to explore its arcades and to climb over its walls before eventually snuggling up close to me in the dark, gentle night. Going into a town for the first time, especially at night, is a bit like a first date, with all the excitement and apprehension that involves. (A travelling companion once told me, as we were going through Central Asia, just twenty years old, that he loved arriving in a new town at night since it prolonged the pleasure, and the feeling of disorientation, that comes with not knowing where you are and of then discovering a town progressively at dawn.).” (A.G.)
