F.E.R.V.E.T. Low-Fi

TFTF

The old abandoned factory of F.E.R.V.E.T. was the site of the project for TFTF. From the industrial archaeology to the finds collected in situ, to the images and archival documents kept at the Municipal Library Castelfranco Veneto, to the interviews made, to the sounds collected in the abandoned landscape, the heterogeneous material has been reworked and interpreted as a new narrative where photography and graphics have merged with the sound dimension.

“I was looking for a fact or an image, not a thesis to hold all my details together, and so I arrived at this question: should I just gather items up like creek pebbles into a bag and then let them tumble into their own pattern? Did I really want the reality of randomness? Answer: only if it would yield a landscape with figures, one that would unroll like a Chinese scroll painting or a bison-skin drawing where both the beginnings and the ends of an event are at once present in the conflated time of the American Indian. The least I hoped for was a topographic map of words that would open inch by inch to show its long miles”. William Least Heat-Moon “Prairyerth (A Deep Map)
“Every detail, each event is linked to the next and cannot be investigated individually, only in relation to its proximities, sequences and conditions. What came to us was a fragmented context, consisting of a rich plot of personal stories and collective memories. We entitled our project “F.E.R.V.E.T. Low-fi” (low-fidelity) because the communications on which it was based came from the bottom up: they were not official stories but personal, forgotten and “dirty” ones. F.E.R.V.E.T., one of the first and largest factories in the area of Castelfranco Veneto, now abandoned and no longer working, has been the starting point for our study. We involved some former factory workers and collected their stories, which combine working experiences with private anecdotes, and to which places, objects and figures of Castelfranco Veneto were the background. We went inside the factory, trying to understand the mechanisms of the locomotives and railway carriages. We listened to the sounds of the city and the voices of the people interviewed. We met new friends with whom we shared a good time by drinking a “spritz”, the Italian aperitif. What we have built is a visual and sound archive that tells personal stories of the community of Castelfranco Veneto. Every personal fragment collected becomes the starting point of a network of narrations able to offer new perspectives on the wider story about the entire surrounding territory.” (TFTF)
