A land of smoke and fireGIAMMARIO CORSIThe search for the hidden stretch of an ancient river during the artistic residency in Lecce allowed Giammario Corsi to cross places, approach people or come across a variety of situations, an experience collected in the project A land of smoke and fire. “During the residency in Lecce I discovered that under the city lies the course of an ancient river. In some places this watercourse resurfaces, but it is really visible only at its mouth. I started to follow this river, but I quickly realized that I was looking for something invisible, something in whose existence I could only believe and hope. While following the course of the river I met people, passed through places and, as chance would have it, there were many fires. In this strange combination of encountering fire and searching for a waterway, following both the path of the hidden river and the smoke of the fires in the distance, I photographed what was there and what I encountered.” (G.C.)
