Fresh cuts, old stoneDIETER DAEMENThe selection of images brought together by Dieter Daemen in the project Fresh cuts, old stone, the result of the artist residency “Nature” in the Castelfranco area, seems to question how we try to consider our relationship with nature: are we or are we not nature ourselves, or do we always tend to observe it from a certain distance? “What constitutes nature? Is it the totality of all living organisms on this planet? What about minerals, rocks, oceans, rivers, weather processes, forest fires? Do we consider humanity distinctly separate from nature? Is there then an opposition between culture and nature? Between nature and culture? We might consider it unnatural for the seeds of an exotic species to be transported on a long-distance freight truck, take root on the side of the road, and cause the destruction of a local ecosystem. But isn’t that life form going through its own natural processes? Isn’t that exactly how species and ecosystems change and adapt when viewed over a geological and evolutionary time frame?” (D.D.)
