OLIVO BARBIERI. ALTRE TEMPESTE

The project by Olivo Barbieri takes its cue from Giorgione’s Tempest to explore, through color and light, the landscape of contemporary Veneto. The Renaissance masterpiece by the Venetian painter becomes, for Barbieri, both a key for interpretation and a starting point for a journey that extends from the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice to the mainland and to landscapes marked by historical, architectural, and industrial stratifications. From Carlo Scarpa’s Brion Tomb in Altivole to Antonio Canova’s Gypsotheca in Possagno, and from Villa Parco Bolasco to the Museo Casa Giorgione in Castelfranco, Barbieri alternates wide views and minute details, intertwining pictorial quotations with reflections on the present. The volume Altre Tempeste, produced as part of the project OMNE LAND. Altre Tempeste—supported by Strategia Fotografia 2024 and promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture—investigates the transformations of the Northeastern Italian territory: warehouses, historic buildings, and natural and urban landscapes are juxtaposed with an artistic memory stretching from Giorgione to Veronese. For Barbieri, photography is a laboratory where painting, architecture, and science converge; what matters is not only the represented object but the very way in which vision is constructed. In this process, color becomes a structural element—capable of capturing the Venetian tradition while offering new ways to interpret the present. The publication presents 32 previously unpublished works by Olivo Barbieri, accompanied by critical essays by Manlio Brusatin, Mauro Varotto, Stefania Rössl, and Matteo Melchiorre. The volume has been published on the occasion of the exhibition Olivo Barbieri. Altre Tempeste, curated by Stefania Rössl, Massimo Sordi, and Matteo Melchiorre, Museo Casa Giorgione, Castelfranco Veneto, 26 September – 2 November 2025.
